Carex nigra - Black Flowering Sedge

Carex nigra, commonly known as Black Flowering Sedge, Black Sedge, or Smooth Black Sedge, is a highly resilient, clump-forming perennial sedge native to moist meadows, marshes, and wetlands across Europe, North America, and parts of Asia. It is widely celebrated for its fine-textured, dark blue-green to blue-gray foliage that features a distinctive powdery white underside, bringing cool-toned contrast to wet landscapes. 

True to its specific epithet nigra (meaning black), it produces tight, purplish-black to deep chocolate brown flower spikes and seed heads from late spring into summer. These unique flower heads rise just above the arching foliage, giving the plant a charming "checkered" or smoky texture.
