Eleocharis montevidensis—widely known as Giant Hairgrass—is a native North American sedge that provides an exceptionally clean, modern, and textured look to a pond's edge. Composed of thousands of ultra-thin, straw-like, bright green blades, it creates a soft, swaying "aquatic meadow" or riverbank appearance that beautifully breaks up the harsh stone lines or dark soils of a pond liner.

When planted at the shoreline, it grows effortlessly into its emersed form, shooting up narrow flower spikes with small brown seed heads at the very tips of its stems.
It propagates rapidly via thin underground runners. Planted in small, spaced-out clusters along a shoreline, it will stitch together over a single season to form a continuous, dense curtain of fine green grass that filters runoff water and shelters small pond fish or frog fry.
Maintenance Tip: Unlike standard lawn grass, avoid hacking down or mowing the tops if it gets too tall at your pond edge. Damaging the tips can cause individual thin blades to yellow and die back down to the root. If you need to thin it out or clear space, it is best to pull entire small clumps out from the base by their runners.
