Equisetum hymale 'Robustum' - Giant Horsetail

Equisetum hyemale 'Robustum'—commonly known as Giant Horsetail or Rough Horsetail—is a prehistoric, non-flowering perennial that introduces an incredibly striking, architectural silhouette to a pond's edge.

Often described as looking like a miniature forest of green bamboo or an ancient "living fossil," it features thick, hollow, unbranched vertical reeds segmented by contrasting black bands at each joint. Instead of flowers or seeds, it reproduces via primitive spore-bearing cones (strobili) at the very tips of its stems.
Thrives in saturated, boggy muck, mud, or submerged in shallow water up to 2 to 4 inches deep. It can also adapt to standard landscape soil as long as it receives frequent moisture.

While Giant Horsetail is magnificent for design, it is one of the most aggressive plants you can introduce to a pond area:
1. The Rhizome Invasion: It spreads via an incredibly dense, deep, and rugged network of underground rhizomes. If planted directly into raw mud or soil along a natural pond edge, it can quickly punch through weak barriers and aggressively colonize your yard, crowding out everything else.
2. How to Contain It: Always plant Giant Horsetail in sealed, heavy-duty pond baskets or plastic tubs with no drainage holes, resting the containers on your pond's marginal shelves. Do not let the roots escape over the top of the pot. If your pond uses a flexible rubber liner, keep this plant safely contained to ensure its tough roots never put pressure on your liner seams.
