Houttynia cordata - Green Heart Leaf

Houttuynia cordata (frequently spelled Houttynia), commonly known as Green Heartleaf, Fish Mint, or Dokudami, is an incredibly vigorous, herbaceous perennial native to the moist woodlands, riverbanks, and marshy ravines of East and Southeast Asia.

The standard species is characterized by its lush, carpet-forming heart-shaped bright green leaves that release a sharp, distinct citrusy-peppery aroma (resembling cilantro mixed with fish) when crushed. In late spring and summer, it produces small spike inflorescences flanked by four white, petal-like bracts that resemble simple white stars against the dense green canopy.
