Pontederia cordata—commonly known as Pickerel Rush, Pickerel Weed, or Wampee—is a vigorous, native North American aquatic perennial. It belongs to the water hyacinth family (Pontederiaceae) and is a staple in backyard ponds, water gardens, and natural wetland restoration projects.
The common name "Pickerel Rush" stems from the historical observation that pickerel fish (young pike) frequently use the plant's dense underwater stems and roots as shelter and hunting grounds.

 

Wildlife Superhost: It is an exceptional wildlife plant. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, while the submerged foliage protects aquatic organisms. Late in the season, ducks and muskrats eat the nutritious seeds.
