Pontederia dilatata - Royal Pickerel Rush

Pontederia dilatata—commonly known as the Royal Pickerel Rush or Giant Pickerel Weed—is a majestic, oversized relative of the standard North American pickerel rush. Primarily native to the tropical and subtropical wetlands of South America, this species is highly prized in water gardening for its dramatic scale, lush architectural presence, and massive floral displays.

Unlike common pickerel rush (P. cordata) which tops out around 2 to 3 feet, the Royal Pickerel Rush is a true giant, easily reaching heights of 4 to 6 feet under the right conditions.

Wildlife Value: A massive beacon for pollinators, its large flower spikes attract continuous swarms of bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds from mid-summer through autumn.
