Taxodium distachium - Bald cypress

Taxodium distichum (commonly known as the Bald Cypress, Swamp Cypress, or Southern Cypress) is a majestic, long-lived deciduous conifer native to the saturated swamps and riverbasins of the Southeastern United States. Belonging to the Cupressaceae family, it holds the unique distinction of being a cone-bearing tree that drops its needles in the winter (hence the name "bald"). It is famed for developing structural, knobby "cypress knees" that rise out of the water around its flared base.
