Typha latifolia ‘Variegata’ - Variegated cattail

Typha latifolia 'Variegata' (commonly known as the Variegated Cattail) is an exceptionally striking, architectural semi-aquatic perennial cultivar of the native common cattail. It is highly valued in water gardening because its vertical growth habit provides strong structural lines while its striking cream-and-green vertical striping adds brightness to dark pond edges. Unlike the aggressive native species, this variegated variety exhibits a much slower, more manageable growth rate, making it highly desirable for backyard water features.

Winter Value: The foliage transitions to a rustic tan or bronze shade in late autumn, and the sturdy brown flower heads remain intact, providing cold-season architectural interest and nesting material for wild birds.

In mid-to-late summer, towering stems produce the classic, sausage-shaped flower spikes. The top portion consists of the yellowish male pollen flowers, while the thick, velvety chocolate-brown lower section comprises the female flowers that persist into winter.
